Make A Difference with ICE

Written by Merve on September 30, 2006

A recent article from the Toronto Star, “the ICE idea”, is catching on and
it is a very simple, yet important method of contact for you or a loved one
in case of an emergency. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the
population, all you need to do is program the number of a contact person or
persons and store the name as “ICE”.

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when they went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn’t know which numbers to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name to file “next of kin”
under.

Following a disaster in London, the East Anglican Ambulance Service has
launched a national “In case of Emergency (ICE)” campaign. The idea is that
you store the word “ICE ” in your mobile phone address book, and with it
enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted “In Case of
Emergency “. In an emergency situation, Emergency Services personnel and
hospital staff would then be able to quickly contact your next of kin, by
simply dialling the number programmed under “ICE”.

Please relay this to everybody in your address book. It won’t take too
many “forwards” before everybody will know about this. It really could save
your life, or put a loved one’s mind at rest. For more than one contact name
simply enter ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

A great idea that will make a difference !

Ideas For A Greener Halloween

Written by Merve on September 28, 2006

Here’s what you can do …

1. Be an Eco-warrior for Halloween this year.
Visit www.conservation.org/ecofootprint to measure the size of your ecological footprint. It’s quick, easy, and educational. At the end, you’ll discover whether you’re and Eco-novice, -apprentice, -ally, or -warrior and get tips on how to be as light-footed as you can be.

2. Take the Halloween Eco-pledge
Whether it’s being extra creative with your costume, using a canvas bag to capture your treats, or tricking others into carpooling that night, one small change can make all the difference. Take the Halloween Eco-Pledge now!

3. Tell Someone!
Each of your small actions can spark a chain of other actions. Tell just two of your friends or family members to measure their eco-footprints or sign the pledge along with you, and you’ve multiplied your impact. It’s that easy.
If humans are part of the cause of today’s environmental scary story, we can be part of its solution, and we can start with a greener Halloween.

A Greener Halloween

Written by Merve on September 26, 2006

The state of our planet is a little spooky right now. Human activity and modern conveniences are taking a significant toll on the plants, animals, and natural resources we rely on. Climate change, species extinction, and other urgent environmental issues threaten all life on Earth, including us.

The scariest part of it all? We could witness waves of extinctions in as few as 50 years, and there doesn’t seem to be an easy way to prevent them.

Except …

If each of us — billions of individuals worldwide — made modest changes in our everyday lives, we could protect the planet and its resources for ourselves, our kids, and for future generations.

I know it’s unlikely that billions of people will sign up today to alter their lifestyles.. But what if 2,000 people over the next few weeks pledged to make one small change? What if those 2,000 people encouraged 2,000 more to do the same? And what if it were simple, like trying something new this Halloween?

Hollywood’s Humanitarian Couple

Written by Merve on September 22, 2006

With all the news one sees on the excessive lifestyles of all these highly-paid celebrities, it was breath of fresh air to see Hollywood’s golden couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Joile announce that they are donating $2M to help impoverished and sick children in the world’s most depressed areas.

Through their newly-formed charity, the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the couple are donating the money to two organizations they have admired, Global Action for Children and Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors without borders).

In her statement to the press, Angelina Jolie expressed how much she admired the people who worked for these causes:

“I have seen these brave men and women working in war zones and horrific conditions and I deeply admire them.”

Jolie has been working with global charities for some time, travelling around the world with Brad to further her work for refugees as U.N. Goodwill Ambassador. They then donated $300,000 for medical equipment Namibia where their daughter Shiloh was born. Her first photographs were also sold to the press to raise money for charity.

The very grateful U.S. director for Global Action for Children, Jennifer Delaney told the Associated Press:

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt not only care, but more important, are taking concrete action to address the fact that there will be 20 million children orphaned by AIDS by 2010, and millions more orphaned by tuberculosis, malaria and conflict or whose parents are sick and dying.”
