Hats Off to Starbucks’ Cause

Written by Merve on October 29, 2008

Starbucks holds an annual cause helping out the people in need. The latest social work that they have been doing has to do with helping fight AIDS and tuberclosis in Africa, in partnership with REDS.

With or without the said ties, Starbucks has had a good history of helping out people in need, especially when the holiday season sets afoot. The program is something that can be seen with other causes but the thing is, they are consistent.

In all parts of the world, this practice is something common. Considering that they are more than just a coffee serving company, you have to admire how they put emphasis in giving back to society for placing them where they are and connecting the people in need with their customers.

Such a cause is something that adds to their brand image as well, focusing more on being able to help unfortunate people that really require aid and assistance. Starbucks is in a bind as well as it is slowly feeling the hard times of doing business worldwide. But despite all these factors in crisis, you cannot help but tip your hat towards the efforts that this coffee serving institution has been doing since years back until the present.

“Starbucks gives (Red) the opportunity to do something good every day,” said Jenifer Willig, director of partner management and marketing at (Red). “We have amazing partners who have great products, but this is an everyday product. We can bring the power of the Starbucks community together to help raise millions of dollars and save thousands of lives in Africa.”

Presidential Candidate Cabbage Patch Dolls up for Auction

Written by Merve on October 28, 2008

Sarah Palin is certainly a famous name we hear of today and one of the things that have been drawing quite a ruckus is that of her image made in one of the Cabbage Patch Kids.

All proceeds from the auction, which begins Thursday and ends Nov. 4, will benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Jakks Pacific will also auction six limited edition 25th-anniversary dolls that have been created to look identical to the original Cabbage Patch Kids that were first released in 1983.

Actually, it is not just Palin that will be up for grabs. Barack Obama, John McCain and Joe Biden also have Cabbage Patch doll imitations that will surely be something any collector would want to have. Further, the cause for offering them up for grabs at eBay is certainly something most people will want check out and bid for as long as they can afford them.

“These four folks in particular seemed like the perfect candidates, if you will, to become one-of-a-kind Cabbage Patch Kids,” said Jakks Pacific Inc. spokeswoman Genna Rosenberg. “We’ve had a great history with making celebrity look-alikes with these Kids. We’ve done everyone from Elvis to Donald Trump to Ellen (DeGeneres) and Oprah (Winfrey).”

Modeling for Charity

Written by Merve on October 27, 2008

Anyone can do their part for charity. In fact, fashion shows which have the usual models showcasing the latest wardrobe design ideas from noted designers today is a good way to put everything in perspective.

Such was the intent of a glamorous fashion show that was held in London, featuring top catwalk models, the same agency that handles Kate Moss. For their efforts, they were able to raise more than £3,000 for charity.

Models1 successfully modeled for a cause using garments made by Hollywood Collections, a fashion store in Barnt Green and accessories from Solihull boutique Le Scarpe in the glitzy bash at Hogarths Hotel in Solihull. The funds raised will be given to Cancer Research UK and the Love Care Charity in Chennai as organized by hotel owner, Helena Hogarth.

“This £3,000 will go towards making this orphanage as comfortable as possible for the orphans and giving them a better chance in life. I’d like to thank all who took part and helped support these two amazing charities.”

At these trying times, such an amount is modest enough for a worthy cause. Especially now that the holiday season is fast approaching, it would be nice to see such efforts which is sure to grow in the next couple of weeks, regardless if hard times are here. Besides, charity is about giving what you can and not really about the amount you are able to give.

Corpses to Rise at Princess of the Stars Tragedy

Written by Merve on October 25, 2008

After months of planning and waiting, the bodies of the victims of the Sulpicio Lines Princess of the Stars tragedy will finally be retrieved. The question is, isn’t this a bit too late?

We have heard the cries of many Filipinos in the past months and apparently this stems from the fact that they lost their loved ones but have yet to determine if they are indeed among the casualties. Expecting that most of the corpses that they will find will be beyond recognition, retrieval operations are expected to have their work cut out for them especially upon identification of the bodies that are sure to have decayed beyond recognition by now.

Issues such as poisonous chemicals and all have delayed the retrieval operations in Romblon and to safeguard the nearby areas, the need to first take out the chemicals was the priority. It is indeed hard to accept and understand the logic but basing it in general, it would be best to look out for the safety of the nearby towns before addressing the bodies of the dead who were trapped inside the vessel.

For proper identification of the bodies, requirements such as birth certificates, dental records and blood samples were required before the bodies can be released to their families. At this point, you would have to wonder if it still makes sense since the only confirmed thing is that they lost a lot of loved ones from this unexpected tragedy.

Sleeping for a Cause

Written by Merve on October 20, 2008

There are a lot of homeless people out there and perhaps one issue that has to be addressed is the place they sleep. We would normally see them in dark alleys or abandoned buildings but would that be sufficient for us to let go?

These days, it is an issue that many would not consider. But for humanitarian issues, causes that can be likewise addressed by the government need a little push. It is indeed unfortunate to see these people suffering and the credit crunch and global crisis we now find ourselves in is sure to pry is away from trying to help out these people. But we can make a difference with small causes.

There are people who take note of these issues. In fact, getting together for a cause can be something that can call the attention of groups concerned in doing something about it. We often drive them away from public places since it is entirely degrading as far as society is concerned. But maybe we can also take into consideration on finding ways to help them out.

A group of concerned Lubbock citizens got together a few months ago to organize an event called Lie Down to Stand Up. It started with a prayer vigil Saturday Night, and participants actually spend the night outside with the homeless. They hope it will bring attention to the problems homeless people face in Lubbock, people like Walter Paschal, or “Red” to those who know him. “They call me red here on the street. I’ve been living up here on the streets a long time,” said Paschal.
