Thirst Aid

July 27, 2011 By Charities Blog

The non-profit group has been running for quite sometime since the Tsunami’s of past and they have been filling the gap that left millions of people without clean drinking water. Founded by Curt and Cathy Bradner, an American couple who have given up everything to help the poor people of Myanmar (formerly Burma) many of whom lack basic necessities for safe and healthy living as most of Asia’s developing countries. Myanmar, being run by a Military Junta has been cut-off from the rest of the world by a military that reports directly to their generals. Suspicious of Westerners (mostly Americans) whom they distrust due to criticism they receive from most of the West.

thirstaid.JPG

The couple have been working in the country for quite sometime and have bought Visas (long term) which is a rarity in the country. The tsunamis devastated much of the effected areas contaminating water tables, decaying animals and people who were left without proper burial have also contributed to the pollution which if not corrected, would kill just as many people that were killed during the disaster itself. Disease is the aftermath of any disaster and many of them are spread through contaminated drinking water. Many of the developing world’s diseases are water-borne and the couple who started it all has been working ever since to get safe and clean drinking water to all who needs it. They have focused their efforts on Myanmar due to the utter isolation of the country from the rest of the world.

They sold everything they had and made a promise to get clean and safe drinking water to all who need it. The tsunami ravaged Myanmar was a perfect area for them to operate in due to little or no contact with the outside world. They designed simple filters made of pottery and lined with coconut husks that are capable of filtering out almost all of the harmful bacteria and other contaminants that may be present in the water. It is estimated that every 15 seconds, a child dies form disease caused by drinking untreated or polluted water and they have been fighting ever since to bring their low cost water filters to poor people who do not have much cash to purchase commercial filtration systems. The coconut and earthen filter removes all but the tiniest contaminants with a colloidal silver solution mixed in to kill any deadly pathogens that may still be left in the water. They are then safe for all to drink, especially children whose small bodies can be easily ravaged by disease.

The country is so poor that most live in huts outside of the capital with not much in terms of modern infrastructures to support the country’s growing population. They need help in their projects and their children back home manage and maintain their web site which is one of the ways they earn money for their many projects. They have managed to produce filtration systems that run from car batteries and they are in urgent need of money for funding and other purposes for them to continue helping those who need it the most.

Donate Something Still Useful to Charity

February 17, 2011 By Charities Blog

When we hear of solicitations, chances are our mindset would be to give away old clothes or canned goods just to say that we made a charitable act. But while this is something generous of us, it may be wise for us to use logic at times. Old clothes still have categories and this includes “still usable”. These days, people forget about this important necessity. We stock up old clothes and put them in sacks since we cannot use them. But before we placed them there, we already have an idea on whether they can still be used or not.

Old clothes are a big help to the needy. But apparently, we cannot discount the possibility of giving away clothes that are good as trash. Since we donate them, people receiving them do not have a choice of selecting and make do with what we can give. But personally, we should take out the clothing that are no longer usable.

Canned goods can be in any form. The normal ones we give out are the cheap ones such as sardines. For a couple of extra bucks, perhaps we can add something different like perhaps milk or something healthy. If all the poor people had to live on sardines, imagine at the level of help they can get.

All I am saying is that when you give to charity, mean it. It is not about taking something out of the closet or the kitchen cabinet to say you did a good deed. We are giving to people as well. Just imagine how you would feel if you were in their shoes.

Wacky Charities – Keep-a-Breast.Org

December 17, 2010 By Charities Blog

Breast cancer kills millions all over the world and like most killer diseases, early detection is the key. New treatments and diagnostic procedures aim to cut off the disease as early as possible to allow the best approach and combination of treatments that may result in reduction or prevention of the disease taking hold in the first place. The Keep-a-Breast Organization aims to raise awareness of the disease through one of the most innovative and wacky methods I’ve ever seen in quite sometime, taking plaster casts of breasts (the whole torso actually) and having prominent artists working with them, turning them into works of art for all to enjoy.

With tie-ups in media and other organizations, they hope to bring the message of prevention and care to all women they come across through exhibitions of their art (torso casts) along with mini-versions they offer at events such as concerts and exhibits of their collection.
The life-casts are made, painted and auctioned off to fund other awareness programs they hope to reach more of the younger generation with. From tee’s to other items, they do auctions and sell merchandise for the benefit of breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer is considered to be the the sixth most lethal disease that afflicts women from all ages which makes the call for better diagnosis and treatment all the more urgent. Support Keep-a-breast.Org and help women become aware of the risks and methods by which they can stay healthy and safe for the rest of their lives.

Putting Disabled People to Work

September 30, 2010 By Charities Blog

The sight of a disabled child or person who pushes himself to earn a living despite having deficiencies in some parts of their bodies or from their manner of thinking is something that should inspire the normal man. Putting aside their current situation and status to give them a reason to live is the most important factor that touches the hearts of people who see them.

Disabled People Who Want To Live Normally

There are a lot of foundations that have taken this cue and even gone to the extent of helping them earn their keep and efforts through referrals and sponsorships. Working for a cause is the best term to generalize everything that these disabled people invest. Rarely would you see people putting time for such people who make the best out of what they can.

People who have some deficiencies cannot live normally but in most cases, it is the disabled people who seem to show more promise because they know that in their hearts that there is so much to accomplish if they are given a chance to be side by side with the normal and fortunate people of today.

Rachael Ray: Pet Champion

May 27, 2009 By Charities Blog

rachael-rayYou will know her by her gawky smile. Or maybe by her raucous laughter. No matter what some people may think of her, Rachael Ray seems to have something going on for herself. She has this tendency to charm people and it seems that her charm extends to animals as well.

Just recently, the celebrity chef cum talk show host was honored by the North Shore Animal League America with the President’s Award for Humanitarian Excellence. What for? The Cat Channel has the story:

NSALA has chosen Ray as the recipient of this award for her efforts on behalf of companion animals, according to the no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization. The award will be presented to her at the eighth annual Lewyt Humane Awards Luncheon on June 3.

Ray has helped charities that take care of animals through Rachael’s Rescue, which highlights animal welfare organizations such as NSALA, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls (BAD RAP).

That is not all, though. She has even gotten together with Ainsworth Pet Nutrition to come up with a line of dog food and treats. You may have seen this product line, Rachael Ray Nutrish. Proceeds from the sales of these products are donated to pet charities, by the way. (I am pretty sure she does not serve these up on her cooking shows, unless her guests are dogs.)

So there you have it – even people who cook meat (and she does cook meat) can be animal lovers as well!

Wind Farms

March 13, 2008 By Charities Blog

wind-farm.jpg
Various industries and environmental groups have been pushing for the investment of government’s and other organizations such as oil firms who other people blame as the primary culprits in the war on nature to find better ways of generating power for our daily needs. In the Philippines, the Japanese and US government’s have long been engaged in the development of geothermal energy which is an alternative energy source that is non-polluting and sustainable. Wind farms are beginning to pop out on places which get optimal wind conditions all year round having several giant towers with blades that spin massive generators to create electricity./ The commitment to providing such investments in alternative energy technology does not come cheap and companies live Chevron-Texaco have been trying to provide these facilities to help the environment.
Out at sea, on hilltops that lay barren, wind farms are being put up with each one costing millions if not hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some people love it some don’t, arguing that why should they pay for facilities they wanted no part of in the first place. These people should learn to accept the fact that they are obligated to accept and help promote environmental measures that affects their very dragonball z survival for tomorrow. Only a small percentage of power is generated by alternative power sources but as people begin to accept the fact that we all have to do our own little parts, the more they become amiable to such ideas. Even small-scale power production through building mounted wind farms that use small dinner-plate sized impellers tied together to create the necessary force to generate electricity have been tried and are currently in use in India. Public schools have their laboratories powered by such green tech and they are beginning to get notice from the experts for it truly is clean and green.

Sharing Your Heart on Valentines Day

February 12, 2007 By Charities Blog

There are people who spend special events such as Valentines by sharing to the less fortunate. The immediate thinking of most people is that their partners deserve the due attention. But the truth of the matter is that Valentines can also be celebrated with their parents or people who have no one else to turn to.

For people who happen to live in the shabby places such as dumps and lesser presentable places of the world, sharing something in the form of clothes, goods or throwing a small pot luck type of party for them more than fattens the human heart.

Valentines Day Special

Valentines Day is indeed the day of the hearts. But people should note that hearts day is not limited to couples who love one another. Love can be approached in different aspects but it is more on giving attention on what a person is able to share that is important in most cases.

Purchasing Handcrafted Products for a Cause

February 7, 2007 By Charities Blog

People who have had tough luck over the world are usually given another chance by people who believe in preaching proactive development. Disabled and jobless people who have hidden talent if given the proper breaks have chances to build on such opportunities, helping them take on life a lot more positively.

Handcrafted Products

Products usually done by hand, weave or patience passes the usual quality that people look for. While people still prefer their usual brands, a lot of masterfully producing people have had their share of working for their keep by offering their works to people who check out the individual talent of these lesser fortunate people daily.

Some would do it for charity, while some are doing it because of the fine craftsmanship. Whichever the reason for purchasing some good labored products is concerned, the opportunity to produce and earn income from their actual efforts is what people will always be open to anywhere in the world.

Paul Newman’s Pursuit Of Common Good

October 6, 2006 By Charities Blog

Paul Newman‘s range of products are the perfect example of what commercial foods should be. They are delicious, charmingly packaged, good for you and they help millions of charities around the world. And on top of that, they are now also good for the environment, what with the new organic line created with his daughter Nell.

Founded by the formidable Hollywood star Paul Newman, Newman’s Own was based on idea of homemade extras- all-natural salad dressings, sauces and lemonade. Paul did not expect the venture to be a big success, but over 20 years later, the company has made more than $ 175 Million in profits, all of which has gone to charity.

The newer line of organic products, Newman’s Own Organics (a division of Newman’s Own) was launched in 1993 by Nell Newman, Paul’s daughter and because a separate company in 2001. The products here are again fantastic-tasting, but more importantly are organic, meaning the ingredients are without any harmful chemicals, pesticides, hormones and other nasty things, as well as being farmed in way that preserves the environment.

Pretzels, cookies, fair trade coffee, oil, and pet food are among its products, and recently a new range of fresh produce of salad greens, spinach and baby carrots have been added.

Wouldnt it be great if the other large food companies around the world followed suit in the pursuit of common good?
